Abstract

Software defect prevention through design phase reviews is an important quality practice for identifying design weaknesses before coding, testing, and deployment activities begin. In enterprise software projects, many defects originate from incomplete design logic, unclear module responsibilities, weak interface definitions, poor data flow descriptions, and inconsistent alignment with approved requirements. This article discusses how structured design reviews help prevent defects by examining architecture, module decomposition, database design, interface behavior, error handling, security controls, and design traceability. It explains the role of review checklists, UML models, walkthrough sessions, dependency analysis, peer inspection, and approval records in improving design quality. The article also highlights common challenges such as rushed design activities, outdated design documents, limited stakeholder participation, and weak synchronization between requirements and technical models. A structured design phase review approach is presented to reduce downstream coding defects, improve testability, strengthen maintainability, and support reliable software delivery. The study concludes that effective design reviews improve early defect prevention, reduce rework, and enhance software quality in enterprise development projects.
