Software maintenance metrics are important in application support contracts where service quality, response time, defect correction, enhancement handling, and operational stability must be measured clearly. In enterprise support environments, weak metric tracking can lead to unresolved tickets, delayed fixes, poor vendor accountability, unclear service performance, and increased maintenance cost. This article discusses how maintenance metrics help monitor support activities against contractual expectations and service-level agreements. It explains the role of ticket volume, response time, resolution time, defect reopening rate, backlog size, change request completion, system availability, and customer satisfaction in evaluating support performance. The article also highlights common challenges such as inconsistent ticket classification, incomplete effort records, unclear priority definitions, delayed status updates, and difficulty separating corrective and enhancement work. A structured maintenance metrics approach is presented to improve contract monitoring, resource planning, vendor evaluation, and continuous service improvement. The study concludes that effective use of maintenance metrics strengthens accountability, improves support quality, and supports reliable management of enterprise application support contracts.
