Software maintenance effort tracking is an important practice in legacy applications where continuous corrections, enhancements, migration tasks, and operational support consume significant project resources. In long-running enterprise systems, maintenance effort may increase due to outdated code structures, poor documentation, technology obsolescence, hidden dependencies, recurring defects, and limited knowledge of original design decisions. This article discusses how structured effort tracking helps organizations measure, control, and improve maintenance activities in legacy software environments. It explains the role of change request logs, defect records, time sheets, module-level effort reports, maintenance categories, root cause analysis, and productivity metrics in understanding maintenance workload. The article also highlights common challenges such as unclear task classification, repeated emergency fixes, undocumented code changes, dependency on senior developers, and difficulty separating corrective, adaptive, perfective, and preventive maintenance effort. A structured maintenance effort tracking approach is presented to support better planning, cost estimation, resource allocation, and modernization decisions. The study concludes that systematic tracking of maintenance effort improves transparency, reduces uncontrolled support costs, and supports sustainable management of legacy enterprise applications.
