Software Reuse Barriers in Enterprise Development Teams

Abstract

Software reuse barriers are common in enterprise development teams where existing code, components, services, templates, libraries, and design assets could reduce effort but are often not reused effectively. In large software projects, reuse may fail due to poor documentation, weak component ownership, inconsistent coding standards, limited awareness of reusable assets, tight coupling, and lack of trust in existing modules. This article discusses how these barriers affect development productivity, software quality, maintenance effort, and project delivery timelines. It explains the role of reusable component repositories, standard interfaces, code review, documentation quality, dependency control, and organizational reuse policies in improving reuse practices. The article also highlights common challenges such as duplicated development work, unclear licensing or approval rules, outdated shared libraries, and resistance from teams that prefer building new solutions. A structured reuse management approach is presented to improve asset visibility, reduce redundant coding, support faster development, and strengthen software consistency. The study concludes that reducing reuse barriers improves enterprise software productivity, maintainability, and long-term development efficiency.
