Abstract

Software maintenance request prioritization is an important practice in support systems where defect fixes, enhancement requests, user issues, configuration changes, and operational tasks must be handled according to business urgency and technical impact. In enterprise environments, poor prioritization can lead to delayed critical fixes, overloaded support teams, unresolved backlogs, user dissatisfaction, and increased operational risk. This article discusses how structured prioritization helps support teams classify and schedule maintenance requests based on severity, business impact, affected users, system criticality, effort required, dependency, and service-level targets. It explains the role of request logs, impact assessment, priority matrices, approval workflows, escalation rules, and historical support data in improving maintenance control. The article also highlights common challenges such as unclear request descriptions, stakeholder pressure, conflicting priorities, limited resources, and difficulty balancing urgent fixes with planned enhancements. A structured prioritization approach is presented to improve response time, reduce backlog, support better resource allocation, and strengthen service reliability. The study concludes that effective maintenance request prioritization improves support efficiency, protects business continuity, and supports sustainable maintenance of enterprise software systems.
