Abstract

Software architecture documentation is important because it records the major structural decisions, system components, interfaces, relationships, constraints, and quality attributes that guide software development and maintenance. IEEE 1471 guidelines provide a structured approach for documenting software architecture through stakeholder concerns, architectural viewpoints, views, rationale, and system context. Traditional architecture documentation may describe only diagrams or component lists, but it may not clearly explain why architectural decisions were made or how they address stakeholder needs. This article focuses on software architecture documentation using IEEE 1471 guidelines by examining architectural descriptions, stakeholder identification, viewpoint selection, view construction, concern mapping, and decision rationale. The study discusses how IEEE 1471-based documentation can improve design communication, support architecture evaluation, strengthen traceability, and help maintenance teams understand complex systems. The article concludes that structured architecture documentation improves software maintainability, reduces design ambiguity, supports better decision-making, and contributes to long-term system quality.
